The Greek System
Fraternities and sororities in North America.
American college fraternities trace back to Phi Beta Kappa, founded in 1776, which set many of the conventions still in use: Greek letters, a ritual, a badge and a code of ideals. Social fraternities spread through the 1800s, including the "Miami Triad" at Miami University, and today they make up the Greek community on hundreds of campuses together with sororities.
Most national Greek organizations belong to an umbrella council:
NIC
North American Interfraternity Conference: men's fraternities, including TKE.
NPC
National Panhellenic Conference: women's sororities.
NPHC
National Pan-Hellenic Council: historically Black fraternities and sororities.
NALFO
National Association of Latino Fraternal Organizations.
